Everyone loves a gorgeous landscape, beautiful wildflowers, sunsets and sunrises, trees, reflections, rainbows and even dramatic storms—not just us outdoor photographers.  So, in addition to satisfying yourself, there's a near-universal audience for your work.

At my workshop this year at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center we'll focus on recognizing good compositions in nature, where they occur naturally and when we can improve on them by, a simple example, moving a little or a lot to the one side or the other, or up or down.  In doing so we introduce something of ourselves, our unique way of seeing, into the image.

Compositions don't solely depend on where subject elements like a rock or a tree happen to fall within the scene.  Something has caught your eye.  Then, as photographers, you start some evaluations to best show what you're seeing.  What's the main thing to feature?  Are there any distractions to be kept out of the frame?  Sometimes you have lots of time and sometimes whatever made you stop is so fleeting you've got to size it up and act fast.  Things like ground to sky proportions; what's in direct light and what's in shadow and how much of each are within your visualized frame; what's significant and what's not, must be noticed.

These are only some of the many considerations that go into making successfully composed outdoor photographs.
This workshop will focus on shooting in the photographically rich Aspen/Snowmass environment—mountains, meadows, rivers, lakes— and we'll be shooting at the best times of day for the quality of light.  Between those early morning and evening hours we'll be in the digital darkroom processing our images.  Capturing the image and optimizing it are both necessary in digital photography, especially when shooting RAW files (the best for art photography).

Anderson ranch is excellently equipped with a Mac computer station for every participant as well as the most current software versions of Lightroom and Photoshop.

Come join me there during wildflower season.

cost: $1,145 plus $100 studio fee.
